In 1960s North Carolina, a precocious 10 year old girl has fantasies of escaping her unhappy home, a motel run by her mother. When she befriends a mentally disabled man on his way to an institution, their close bond stirs up trouble. Soon, the rampant town gossip threatens to break them apart.
