Twelve year old Owen, a young boy with terminal cancer, has just lost his best friend, the elderly Mr. Rice. He and his friends break into Mr. Rices empty house on a dare where he finds a series of letters written in code, leading to a treasure hunt that teaches Owen the meaning of hope.
